And I have to agree that if I was to start out by writing for a particular audience, that would mess up what I (hope to be) assume is my best writing. As Richard Hugo said, if you want to have a conversation, pick up the telephone. Or something like that. When we write we need to get into the zone where we are following some kind of primal need to explore our own inner worlds/surfaces/archives such that we can discover a whole new quality, something that stands apart and on its own. If we are continually thinking "Who am I writing this for?"
